Engine Advice

Hey Guys!

We only have 48 hours to go until pulling the trigger on our SMB!!! My question is, if we decided to go for the 2x4 SMB with a lift, which gasser engine should we choose. We are not planning on towing anything, and probably go with 33" tires after the lift.

Should we opt for the V-10 or V-8 for MPG? Any other suggestions are appreciated. Thanks and Happy Holidays!

PS: By the way, we are going EB! Thanks Jeff!!!

Re: Engine Advice

I suggest;
- If you drive more than 8,000 miles per year to get the V8...
- If less than 8k miles, the torque/power/fun will be more with the V10...also the Ford V10 is 'small' at 6.8L. The bigger GM V8 is 6L

Go for the V10. The conversion even w/o 4wd weighs a ton. Especially if you travel into the mtns at all. The 10 is a bulletproof motor and the tranny is upgraded as well (I think)
Yeah you may get a few more mpg w/ the V8 but not much. FYI my V10 w/ 4wd is getting 13 or so. Personally I don't mind the mileage, its not a daily driver and I always have more than enough power here in the mtns of UT - can easily maintain 65-70 up the canyons. W/ the V8 I bet 50-55 would be tops

Just my .02

Enjoy the ride!!

I agree with the previous post. If you're running on flat ground all the time it might not be as much as a factor, but lugging down a motor doesn't help with gas mi. and might become a heat issue. Also if you change your tire height remember to gear the rear end correctly. Athother item you may have already dealt with is the alternator. Go for the most amps you can get. I don't know if a twin alternator is available for the gasser but I wish I would have that installed in my diesel.

Sounds good so far!!! I'm leaning more on the V-10 side anyways, just incase we would like to go 4x4 later. I was thinking of going with the 4:10 Axle and limited slip option with a V-10 engine. Any comments?

V-10

Go with the V-10... You have to drive wide open all the time with the 5.4 and the MPG is not much better.
