Phil

Just so happens I need to be in Vegas on Nov. 7th on business. Gooseberry Mesa is only about 3 hours from Vegas.

... and I need to go back to SCTW next week to have them put new clutch packs in the new Powr-Loc limited slip diff they sold me. I could, in theory, pick up your axel then if it is ready.

Hmmm.....

Keep in mind, I'm just thinking out loud here. Not sure if I can pull the trip off, but just sayin'

Sure, let's call it helping, since mountian biking at Gooseberry Mesa wouldn't be self serving at all.

Unfortunately, as much as I'd love to pull this off, I don't think I can take the time right now. I've been and will be absent from a lot of weekend kid sports lately.

It was a good idea while it lasted though.

Dangit! I was going to give it a go! Well, thanks for thinking of me. If anything changes give me a holler.
I've been wanting to get down there for some Mtn biking as well.

Re: Finding a full floater

We found ours using http://www.car-part.com/ which indexes the stock of a large number of auto-wreckers. There are a few different databases like that that I found hunting around online.

Our axle came at 800$ fully loaded (calipers, rotors, diff) locally in SLC, UT with 65k miles. I did find that searching for a number of different compatible years/vans would show up more results, even though they are effectively the same axle, so some experimenting was in order.

To swap the axle, for at least the SMB 4x4 conversion we have, the axle shock mounts will need to move, and the angle-shims on the spring perches will need to come over to set proper pinion angle. We also upgraded to 1.5" axle-shafts allowing us to move over the differential from our old semi-float axle.

Brake (running and parking) components were all the same between the full-float and semi-float, so that changeover was easy.

Where did you find the larger axle shafts and how much were they? I'd like to keep my carrier since it has the limited slip and correct gear ratio.

Re: Finding a full floater

NAPA carries axle shafts for the Ford van Dana axles. They came up when I was looking for wheel bearings.

We ordered custom ones made from http://www.dutchmanaxles.com/ in Portland OR. Got them in about 1.5 weeks from ordering. I believe they were about 350 or so for the pair, there is online ordering after you measure everything.

I did find, after pouring through a bunch of Dana literature that 1.5" axle shafts of proper length and bolt-pattern were used in the early 80s for a couple trucks, but locating those was near impossible, and likely not worth the cost relative to the new custom ones that I know haven't been abused.

Re: Finding a full floater

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm under a time crunch right now, and a bit worried since I have uneven tire wear on the inboard side of my rear tire.
Did you have to specify different seals/bearings due to the larger diameter shaft?
