You can accomplish the exact same thing by aiming the trans cooler hose into a 5-gallon bucket. Start the van to pump about 6 qts (it comes out quick!), turn off and add 6 qts to the dipstick, and repeat 2 more times. That will effectively exchange out all the fluid, and really does it in same fashion as the diaphram machine at the Ford dealers. Stay away from high-pressure or reverse flush machines (these can blow out seals), especially from ATF recycling machines (you end up getting some of every type of ATF back in your rig).
Dropping the pan is nice you see what in the bottom. But at the same time maybe you don't want to know. Last time my pan was dropped was 175,000 miles ago. Since then I've done the bucket thing twice, once for 6-qts and finally did a full 18-qt exchange not too long ago.
