Ford Diesel Engines Are History
From SMB West today....
Hi Everyone!
We wanted to send a quick note letting you know that Ford has announced they will be discontinuing the diesel motor. November 20th will be the last day to order a diesel van. If you have been thinking about getting a Ford diesel in the future we wanted to let you know the current status. Ford will continue with their gas motors but after Nov. 20th the diesel option will not be available.
If you have any questions you can contact us at info@sportsmobile.com.
Thanks,
Alan and Liz Feld

Re: Ford Diesel Engines Are History
I read that note on Sportsmobile.com last week and was stunned. What will they do with the emergency vehicle market without a diesel option? Ford used to own 80% of the ambulance market and most were diesels.

Not even in pickups? No more, nada??? Just about at the time when other manufacturers are finally seeing the light that the reason that 60% of Europe's sales are diesel are that they make valid sense, they decide to quit making diesels. It's not hard to see why the "Big Three" is now the big zero!

It is the 6.0 that is being dropped, the 6.4 will continue in pickups. The 6.4 won't fit in the van (not that the 6.0 fit well).

Re: Ford Diesel Engines Are History
6.4L is ending as well. Ford is finished with Navistar.
The pickups will get Ford's new 6.7L. The vans will get a diesel later. Probably needs a re-design to make the 6.7L fit.

Re: Ford Diesel Engines Are History
From what I've read, Ford is having trouble with 6.0's emission standard. I had my truck smoged last week and ask the tech about smoging diesels. He replied that California is trying to get the diesels to have some type of Smog check in the future. Don't know his credibility, but I know our state doesn't shy away from getting more $$$.

Re: Ford Diesel Engines Are History
They probably need some time to either re-design a version of it that will fit or re-design van to fit new engine, or both. Same for the new 6.4 gas v-8 that is replacing the v-10.

Re: Ford Diesel Engines Are History
Well all you folks out there with the 6.0 (documented issues notwithstanding) or better the trusty ole 7.3, take heart as you have a collector's item on your hands. At least for while. Me, I've come to truly appreciate the V-10 eventhough I originally wanted the diesel and would love to jump and get one of the last ones. It's a good strong engine, plenty of torque albeit at higher rpm, and reliable as hell. Pushing 50k now and no significant issues. Oil, filters, one fuel pump. Thirsty? Yes (but not THAT far from average diesel mpg's). Powerful, absolutely. I have come to appreciate it immensly.
So those of you who will miss the final window for diesel vans, have no fear, the V-10 is no slacker and has a long heritage of solid power and reliability.
