Garrett Turbocharger

I'm almost ready to rebuild or replace my turbo and I've been looking at Garrett Turbos.

Garrett has two different turbos for a 6.0, a stock replacement and a HP version.

Does anyone have anyone have any experience with either Garret turbo?

I really want to know: does the HP version has any benefit for a stock van 6.0? One source claims the HP version will make more power at a lower boost and reduce EGT's. Supposedly because the wheel is larger it lowers backpressure and therefore lowers boost needed and EGT.

Thanks for any advice.

Mike

Garret Turbocharger

A bigger turbo is usually hard on low end torque which doesn't suit an SMB IMnsHO. Are the Garrett turbos variable vane?

Re: Garret Turbocharger

I think some people go with different internals and the same turbo housing, so they don't run into any issues with the smog police. Not sure if changing the turbo would be noticed, but might be worth checking into.

I think going with a Garrett 38R is a fairly common swap.

Yes. Both of them and the rebuilt on this page are variable vane and bolt-in:

Garrett makes the 6.0 turbo, and the rebuilt and the standard turbo are the normal Ford turbos. The High Performance model is the same external size with different internals - I believe.

Re: Garrett Turbocharger

No turbo expertise to add Mike, but I'm curious if you are considering a replacement as preventive medicine, or because you are experiencing turbo problems now?

Thanks

Re: Garrett Turbocharger

I found another webpage that shows pressure vs. flow of the two turbos:

http://www.usdieselparts.com/index.cfm/ ... harger.cfm

The performance at low pressure/flow is not good on the High Performance model. I guess I should have expected that.

I'm having problems with sticking vanes. Been that way for quite awhile. Probably because The van can sit between trips.

Re: Garrett Turbocharger

You would probably need some mild PCM tuning with the HP version.

edit to add: you might want to give this guy a call. http://www.madturbowerks.com/about.html

Re: Garrett Turbocharger

Like any plumbing system, you also need to know where the greatest restriction to flow is. Improving the performance of the turbo may not help at all if the air box and/or exhaust system are more limiting than the turbo.

You may want to check out RiffRaff diesel out of Oregon. Great outfit.

There's a thorough review of the Garret performance version of the stock turbo here:
