Help with idle surge/stall '99 E350 5.4 4R100

Hi everyone,

Hoping an expert here can help me with a problem I can't figure out. I picked up a '99 E350 a guy was selling for parts because it had no transmission or torque converter. It had been sitting for a couple years.

The next day I found a used 4R100 on CL and grabbed it, and the day after that, a new torque converter from a local shop. My buddy and I installed everything along with a new starter and battery.

Then I crossed my fingers and turned the key. I was blown away when it started up first try. But my excitement was short-lived because it started doing this...

The weird thing is that the surging/almost stalling only happens in Park and Neutral; it goes away in any drive gear (see next video below). Something else I noticed in Park and Neutral is that the trip and main odometers click over miles like I'm driving even though I'm not.

Now when I shift to any drive gear (R, D, 3, 2 or 1), the surging/almost stalling goes away, the speedo goes to zero, the odometers stop clicking over, and it idles perfectly...

Does anybody have a clue what's going on?

It's surging because the "speed" is hitting the speed limiter, which then cuts fuel.

Definitely need to find what's causing the stray PSOM (programmable speedometer odometer module) signal.

I'd start looking for an open ground somewhere. Possibly the ground strap that connects the block to the body at the engine cowling.

Might not hurt to disconnect the transmission control harness as a test, in case there's an electrical problem internal to the transmission.

Open ground or highly corroded ground. My later model has a ground strap at front and rear of motor.

The frame ground strap looks good. The strap that attaches in the gutter on the leading edge of the cowl is wrapped in electrical tape, seemingly to prevent chafing. I’ll take a closer look at it tomorrow.

In the meantime, what do you think of this for a possibility?

I have no idea what year my replacement transmission came out of.

If it is the gear/pulse speed sensor perhaps the Ujoint conversion unit would fix it.
4x4 van conversion parts

Part #: AB001
Price: $180.00
Desc: This control box is required if you plan to mate the NV271 t-case to the E4OD or 4R100 transmission. The vans have a gear driven rear VSS sensor from the factory, and the new truck adapter will be a pulse driven VSS. This module wires in simply to manipulate the signal to the computer, keeping everything happy!

agree with r27d that you probably need a converter to switch from mechanical to electrical input in vss. UJoint kit uses the abbott device. You can buy it from the directly.

Possibly. Disconnect the transmission connecter, and if the problem goes away, you might be on to something.

Is everybody okay w a 4r100 behind a 5.4?
Is programming and trans / ECU the same?

Oops- just saw the link asking pretty much the same thing.

My dad's 2000 5.4L has a 4R100 behind it. I think through 2003 some came with the 4R100 some came with the 4R75? I don't think all 5.4's got the 4R75 until 2004. Either way, I don't think the programming is different, since transmission model isn't an option in the programming.

Ray before I bought the trans I checked and this van originally came with a 4r100. It bolted in perfectly, too, and all the harnesses were exact matches.
