Is 5.4L Enough for a 4x4 Conversion?

After some real searching I finally found this thread...
viewtopic.php?f=39&t=5540&start=15

The thread was encouraging to those with the 5.4L, or those thinking of a purchase. It talks a bit about the capability of the 5.4L v8, but not much about it in a 4x4 SMB with the 4 speed transmission. I want to know what your experience is with this motor and trans with one of the common 4x4 conversions and a RB SMB build out. Is it enough?

I could have put this in either the engine and drivetrain section, or the 4x4 section. If the moderators think it should go to the 4x4 section, then so be it!
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I would go for the V10. Our van is lighter than average for a 4x4, at 8,000 pounds. Off road, I don't think it matters, but going up the passes, at highway speed, the V10 is still only just adequate. JMHO.

Re: Is 5.4L Enough for a 4x4 Conversion?

The 5.4 is a great engine - I have had several and just purchased another (E250, EB51 SMB with everything) and they have been great with 4X4 and correct gearing for tire size. Their only downfall is heavy towing, but then I have been towing 12,000 lbs with my V10 the last few days and even it feels gutless.

I'm buying 5.4 SMBs for a new venture now as they are my preference for it.

Thanks Steve! But, I am not asking about preferences. The original post stated,
"I want to know what your experience is with this motor and trans with one of the common 4x4 conversions and a RB SMB build out."

Thanks for your input Baja!

Re: Is 5.4L Enough for a 4x4 Conversion?

I have an 08 with 5.4l. When it comes to using the 4wd, ive never been in a situation I felt the v8 limited it's ability or left me stranded. The overall size is its limitation IMHO. I'm 50 yrs old with family in tow. I just can't go where I once did in my CJ5 jeep.

I tow a 4500 toy hauler on occasion. It's about the limit in my opinion. Even after adding a tuner chip, she is working too hard to make it up some passes at a descent speed.

Re: Is 5.4L Enough for a 4x4 Conversion?

I have an 08 RB 5.4L with 3.73 diff ratios and 265/75-16's, and I'm very happy with it. My only towing is a small motorcycle trailer.....no issues. Sometimes downshifts when climbing grades but no big deal for me.

Re: Is 5.4L Enough for a 4x4 Conversion?

I have a 2006 E250 with 4.10 gears. I have never had any issues with lack of power while in 4x4. I also tow a 28' pontoon boat (4500 lbs) and it tow's it fine. On the big hills it does slow down but I am fine with that. It is a great motor and I would not hesitate to get another.
Cheers
Darryl

Well if you ever decide the 5.4l isn't powerful enough, there's many more forced induction options including the factory Ford supercharger.

But do they fit in the van's engine compartment and are they emissions legal when installed on a van?

The factory twin screw supercharger effectively replaces the plenum, so it doesn't take anymore space on top. I doubt any of them have e-series specific CARB Certification. But the supercharged F150's are legal aren't they?
