New Smoke

I've been getting some black smoke out of the exhaust the past 1,000 miles. I'm only using the side mirror so a little hard to check, but I only see it when taking off from a stop. It only happens when the engine is warm, not cold. I've lost injectors before, but got a lot more smoke then. I've been using Hot Shot in the oil and I ran injector cleaner in the fuel the last couple of fill ups - no change. No engine light, no codes on my or Fords readers.

Any thots on this????

Re: New Smoke

when I have sticking turbo veins, I get lack of power and black smoke on initial acceleration from a stop, but that throws a code (P0299).

Re: New Smoke

Different animal, but I had similar symptoms on our '05 VW Passat diesel. I just attributed it to age of the engine, but in retrospect I think it was the beginning-of-the-end of the EGR cooler. Ignoring that symptom led to a catastrophic failure of the EGR cooler.

Re: New Smoke

Black smoke only means too much fuel or not enough air. Have you checked your air cleaner? Do you have a way to verify boost?

I have noticed the P0299 code for sticking vanes isn't all that reliable. I've definitely had a stuck turbo and it did not trip that code.

Once you are sure its getting enough air, then good chance an injector is sticking open. A cylinder contribution test would verify this.

Re: New Smoke

Yes, also sometimes those injector products and oil additives produce smoke, did you start using those before or after the symptoms appeared. I get some black smoke, but only when I run my 80HP tune, runs rich.

Re: New Smoke

Installed a new turbo ten months ago. It's always had a little whine since installed, but no codes. Only two months left on the warranty so might decide to pay for more labor to stick in a new one? Also, there is some oil in the turbo intake tube. I cleaned that out, but still getting the smoke.

Any ideas on where the oil in the intake tube could be coming from?

I've been using Opti-Lube fuel additive for several years. Hot shot was added to the oil at last change, about 7,500 miles ago. All this to hopefully avoid injector problems. Yeah right....

Put in a new EGR cooler last year too.

So, drive it till it drops???

Re: New Smoke

If you are talking about the oil in the CAC tube between the engine and the intercooler, I believe a little bit is normal. I had about a 1/2 teaspoon in mine.

The PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) tube vents into the air intake just before the turbo. Oil is sucked into the turbo with the air, then pushed out to the intercooler.

I've haven't taken the other tube off yet, but I would expect oil to be in that one, too.

Re: New Smoke

Thanks for the reply's on this guys. I've been on the road for five days and lots of other stuff going on. I'm going to clean my EGR again and see if that makes any difference.

It also seems that if I let the rig idle for a bit before taking off I don't get the smoke. I'll do some checking on it this week and see what happens.

Carringb, what is a cylinder contribution test? Need to be done at a dealer?

I'll post what I find later.

Dealer or any shop with AutoEngenuity, SnapOn, or any other diagnostics terminal smarter than a basic code reader.
