Re: No more Diesel Fords in '10
So if it's a 3 year wait... That's enough time so design the front end to fit the 6.7L Scorion diesel.
I had thought they may just drop in the 4.4L diesel from the LCF, but looks like they want to sever the ties with IH completely now.
The 6.0 PSD isn't exactly a huge loss. It's only a little more fuel efficient than the V10, but not near as reliable as the V10. Plus the V10 comes within 20 ft./bls of torque, and can beat it with an exhaust upgrade.

Re: No more Diesel Fords in '10
And I thought the 4.5L V6 would be a natural for the van. Same torque (440)and HP (235) ratings as the 6.0 in the van. And the missing two cylinders means they could push the doghouse forward and make some real footroom.
And losing a couple hundred pounds wouldn't hurt either.
Oh well, I'm wasn't planning a buying a new one anyway.

Well we've heard the "no more diesels" before, but this time it might be true. I'm interested to see the Scorpion engine, but I'm sure not going to buy one the first couple of model years.
As for the V10 having nearly the same torque as the 6.0L, that's true, but the diesel makes that torque at a far lower RPM than the V10, and that's where I'd rather have the torque. All said, the Cummins 6BT would be my first choice, and the 7.3L turbo diesel would be my second choice. Come on Lottery!

So Herb,
You going to take your lottery winnings and put a Cummins in your van? Might as well put a 6spd manual trans at the same time and make it perfect.

Re: No more Diesel Fords in '10
Very interesting. I'll be surprised if Ford waits 3 years before selling another diesel van because ambulance companies and fire departments buy the majority of them. Ford would lose market share if they don't offer a diesel van.
The 6.0 diesel was on borrowed time since 2007 when the 6.4 came out. Neither of those engines will meet air pollution requirements that go into effect in 2010. The new 6.7 was designed with those specs in mind. Ford paid a "penalty" (passed onto customers) to keep using the 6.0 diesel in the vans. The diesel option cost when up dramatically after 2007 (to almost $8K over the standard 5.4 gas V8 I believe). I gulped at spending $5K more in 2007.
We haven't had any major issues with our diesel, but have been disappointed with the power and fuel mileage. If I had a "do-over", I'd have saved over $4K and got the V-10. My neighbors would be very thankful not to hear the noise early in the morning...

The V10 is now approved for emergency vehicle use. Most fuel is used at idle (since that's what most ambulance spend most of their time doing). The V10 is very efficient at idle. About 0.7 gallons/per hour with a decent load (lights on and AC). I doubt the diesel is much better.
The near silent idle of the V10 will probably make many drivers and medics happy.

The typical rule-of-thumb is that a diesel engine will use 1/3 the fuel of a gas engine at idle. I do not have the fuel usage numbers at idle for the 6.0L though with a ScanGuage I'll try to remember to get some.

I completely agree.
