Rear Differential/Transmission/Driveshaft noises?
Hello All, I have a '99 e350 V10 quiqley conversion 99k on it.
I have been having this high pitched whine coming from what I think is the tranny or rear diff and it only happens on acceleration and only occasionally. I just had the bearings replaced in the rear diff along with the parts that hold that together, because everything was on its way out back there. The Whine is still there except it is not happening as much, so I think it is not the bearings.
Could it be my driveshaft rubbing on something that is making it whine. Could it be my tranny(please no). Any thoughts, I am at a loss...
Thanks
ReidT

Does the pitch of the whining sound different between acceleration and deceleration? What does the shop that did the work say?

No, the pitch does not change and have not had a chance to call shop as I have been on the road.
Need to call them today, thanks for the reminder.

Re: Rear Differential/Transmission/Driveshaft noises?
I just hung up the phone with my dealership and the technician thinks that it could be the ring and pinion(sp) that is making the whining sound. He talked about temperature playing a part and that after it is heated up that it may affect the ring and pinions.
He did not look at the ring and pinion when he did the bearings and wants to look at that know.
Thoughts out there, before I drop more cash...

Re: Rear Differential/Transmission/Driveshaft noises?
It could easily be the R&P. If so, you can do a couple of things:
- Ignore it. Noisy R&P's can go hundreds of thousands of miles making noise and not fail.
- Get some good moly additive and add 10% to differential oil. We've used this many times to quiet noisy gears. If you have a limited slip diff, the moly will remove the 'limited ' part.
I've used Mr. Moly with success:

although Dow:
http://www.dowcorning.com/applications/ ... CSF=1200EN
and other suppliers should work just as well.
Good Luck,
Mike

Re: Rear Differential/Transmission/Driveshaft noises?
Great thanks for the feedback, I will try some Moly and good to know that these things can just be noisy and bottom line is that is why I have AAA.
I will also look into Ujoints.
Happy Trails!

Do you mean it will become a locker or an open differential if you add the moly? I'm guessing open.
Thanks
Tom
Good Luck,

Re: Rear Differential/Transmission/Driveshaft noises?
Remove the rear driveshaft, shift into 4wd, and if you still hear the noise, it's not the u-joints; at least not the rear. It shouldn't be the front u-joints unless you've been driving around in 4wd.

Re: Rear Differential/Transmission/Driveshaft noises?
Moly (Molybdenum) is a very good solid lubricant. It will make a limited slip differential an unlimited slip one, or completly open. If you have a true locker, it should continue to work.
