Replacing a 460 Big Block

I have a 1992 E350 with an Advanced Four Wheel Drive conversion and a 460 motor. With 245,000 miles on it, it just gave up the ghost. Looking at replacing the engine with a rebuild with 5yr, 50,000 mile warranty. Wondering what else I need to be looking it to and any upgrades and fixes that should be checked out while the engine is out. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Replacing a 460 Big Block

The stock cast exhaust manifolds are prone to cracking. Banks makes a really nice set of headers for the 460, which won't leak, and will add a lot more power if you install the complete PowerPack set.

If you can afford it have the transmission gone over. It will have the same number of mikes on it as the engine. With the new engine and exhaust there is the possibility that the trans will have difficulty handling the power.

I agree with larrie, but I'm kind of bettin the tranny had been rebuilt/replaced already?
Either way, the 460s are getting rare so I would grab one while you can find one I sold mine at 249k on the original (dying) engine, you've done really well to get as far as you did.

Re: Replacing a 460 Big Block

So I had to sell my 1969 VW Single cab in order to have the cash to drop this new engine in my van. Its going to cost about 4K to have them replace this thing. Just wondering if anyone sees any red flags with putting a new engine into this rig. Am I crazy to drop that money into it or should I walk away and save my cash for a different van. Maybe its just cold feet but I wanted to take one last poll before I make the plunge. Any thoughts??

You are gonna spend the money on something van related... may be better to go the "known" path than the "unknown" of another van. IMHO

A replacement 4x4 van is going to much more expensive than he cost of the engine replacement. Depending on your financial situation you may also have car payments to cover he difference. That payment may prevent you from doing upgrades to the new van. Keeping the old van would avoid the payments and allow you to do some other upgrades as needed.

Re: Replacing a 460 Big Block

What condition is the body in? Are there rust issues? Rust is the devils handywork. Once it gets out of hand it's pretty much game over for the vehicle.

If the body is is good shape and the rest of the components aren't in need of major repair it's probably worth sticking with the known rather than buying into someone elses unknown problems.

Re: Replacing a 460 Big Block

As others have said, you'll definitely want to assess the condition of the rest of the vehicle. If the tranny is in need of replacement, or the body has much rust I would definitely look at plan B.

Obviously the 460 is the easiest option because it will bolt right up and anything electronic is ready to go, but have you looked into other options? Investing that kind of money on an engine that will be netting 12 mpg would be a difficult road for me to go down.

Re: Replacing a 460 Big Block

Plan D (or E or F or ..)

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/3335524009.html

Ad says replaced V10 a couple of years ago, rebuilt tranny about 4 years ago. Asking $2995, could maybe get it for a bit lower especially with the recent spike in gas prices which seems to spook everyone. From the picts it has a full floating rearend. Once acquired how difficult to swap over the 4WD pieces (assuming it interchanges well)?

Anyways, just a thought.
