I never heard of this long process being necessary. I have my mechanic do it since he can properly drain and dispose of the used oil. I doubt he it puncturing the oil filter housings (maybe he is, never discussed it), and don't know if he is pre-filling the new filters. It's probably just a straightforward oil change. Never had a problem.

That's a good option as well if you have a local mechanic you trust and don't mind paying their labor charges.
