Stranded in boon docks, beside tools, take what 4 repairs?

Just got stranded in the boon docks - well, actually my local Home Depot parking lot - with my 1990 G20 (5.7 liter). Glad AAA and the shop were close, but what if I had really been in the boon docks? Don't know what went wrong yet (cranked well but no start) guessing fuel pump or spark problems. But I am wondering what others take along in the way of replacement parts for repairs on the spot (in general, not just my particular van).

There's already 2,3 or 4 threads on that subject. Do some searching, and if you can't find the threads, let us know.

A spare serpentine belt, jumper cables, and a small (100 pc) Craftsmen tool set. Oh, a big socket set and breaker bar since I don't typically trust a stock lug wrench. That's about it, you've got to find the balance between space/weight and practicality IMO. And always a cell phone and AAA card.

Thanks - and I improved my search and found a lot under "field repairs"

Lots of water, some food, and a good pair of hiking boots.

I always try to bring parts that you probably canít find in stock at small town stores, but at the same time only parts that I can change in the field by myself. Also remember every part you bring needs the tools to install it.

I think in most towns, especially in the west and in rural places, you're more likely to find someone with the skills and tools to install a given part, than you are to find the part itself. For that reason, I carry a serpentine belt, even though I don't know how to change it. There's also the chance that I could figure it out if the alternative was walking.

That said, why don't you learn and practice at home in a controled situation. It will be less stresfull on you, than if it happens in the middle of the boon docks, and you know what to expect. It's really not that hard. Better to be prepaired
just my 2 cents.

A bug out bag or tricks? How far do you go? I've changed my alternator and I would hate to have to replace it in the field. But I could if need be. That said, I would never carry an extra alternator. I think a good code reader like Zeta has and a sat phone is your best bet. A belt and some sensors can be shoved in the tool kit but overall I think it's best to have the phone numbers of the local tow and/or mechanics of the area you happen to be visiting. At least with the reader you can tell the mechanic what you need. If worst comes to worst, you can hitch a ride out after a call on the sat phone and return with the parts if attempting your own repair. Probably an expensive "cab" ride out much less the ride back

Like Herb said there have been a few posts on the subject.

You can't predict what might happen so the best plan is to assume you might need outside assistance.

Spot satellite devices are affordable.
