Stuck in Utah with black smoke

Greetings All, on our way home from Moab, UT and climbing a pass on the westbound I-70 our tailpipe on our 2005 6.0 psd started spewing heavy black smoke....we limped another 180+ miles and it's now knocking and spewing grey smoke...any ideas of what's gone wrong with our motor?....a diesel mechanic 100 mi back (who said he doesn't work on 6.0's) thought it was an egr problem...we've had no elevated temps, still have strong power, no drop in oil pressure or coolant level and oil looks normal...any thoughts would be greatly appreciated...thx Steve

Re: Stuck in Utah with black smoke

Any codes?
I suspect a stuck EGR valve , FICM or a bad injector.

Re: Stuck in Utah with black smoke

I would not drive it if it's knocking. Could be just a bad injector, you are risking engine damage by continuing to drive it.

Re: Stuck in Utah with black smoke

Black smoke is to much diesel being burned.
Knocking could be a valve or injector that is out of spec.
Grey smoke could be water and/or oil being burned.
Good luck but don't push your luck by driving it...

Re: Stuck in Utah with black smoke

I drove my work truck with a bad injector that caused damage to the motor. To play it safe get a tow.

Sooty black smoke was an injector taking a dump (or likely several, possibly a bad FICM?).

Grey smoke is bad news. Seen this one before. There is a small chance you may have only blown the EGR cooler. But more likely considering the circumstance is a blown head-gasket. If the FICM goes, it can inject fuel during the compression stroke (and hence the knocking). The gets worse as the crush washers fail and dump even more fuel in. Either detonation, or fluid pressure (from un-metered fuel blowing past the crush washers) can stretch you head bolts.

Last time I saw this happen took only about 10 miles from first signs on black smoke to total head gasket failure that was so bad it couldn't build enough compression to re-start.

Re: Stuck in Utah with black smoke

Amazing that all those symptoms wouldn't cause a code to be thrown. Using a ScanGauge?
