Re: Too Cool for School **UPDATE**

Finally got the under bumper air scoop in place:

Looks good, hopefully it won't suck up any animals or small children.

A few observations on the trans cooler "upgrade" and the air scoop (keep in mind it's still winter):

Noticeably lower EGT's and trans temp that haven't gone over 125 (measured at the bottom of the pan, obviously much higher inside). Gonna try pulling the trailer next week so stay tuned...

BTW, Rock-Slide had nothing to do with the fabrication--that's all me!

Re: Too Cool for School

You may want to drill a few weep holes so water can drain out.

It's pitched forward--starts at 3" and goes down to 2". Besides, there's no way my welding is watertight.

Might be an interesting experiment. See if water gets held in with the onrushing air when moving at speed, even though it's pitched forward.

Don't see why water would be an issue.

Re: Too Cool for School

I now have two good trips with the cooling mods and can declare them very successful.

The transmission runs 20F cooler all the time now, and when pulling a very steep grade in low range up Los Burros road on the Big Sur coast (3000 ft in 8 miles of twisty road) the trans temp went to 195F (measured at the bottom of the Mag-Hytec pan) before I turned on the fans which cooled it to below 180F in about ten minutes. Pretty quick way to cool something like 24 qts of ATF.

Removing the stock trans cooler from in front of the radiator and installing a large scoop beneath the bumper has also made a great difference. I still saw 226F pulling a long fast grade on I-80, but it now cools down incredibly fast. In less than two minutes the ECT went from 216F to 186F while decelerating down Pequop summit on I-80 near Wells, NV today in about 70F weather. The temp actually went to 182F ultimately until the thermostat caught up and brought it back to 192F. I call that a result. EGT's--never been an issue--seem a bit lower too. I rarely see over 1100F.

The Zeta rating system gives these mods a triple 'A' rating, so you can take that to the bank.
