Trust a well used 6.0L?

Hi Guys,

I know all of the issues associated and potential problems with the 6.0L diesel. But, would you have any reservations with one that has 227,000 miles on it? I don't have the maintenance history but I'd assume that any issues that surfaced were already addressed. In this case the van is a clean 2006 EB with power everything and a great looking clean slate to start a build on.

What recommendations do you have regarding services for a 6.0L with this many miles on it?
Would you consider the van for $9000?

Thank you.

Pretty critical to have the maintenance records if possible for that mileage, but if not then have a mechanic look at it who really knows this motor. The goods news is, if the rest of the van is really clean then at that price you can justify putting some money into upgrading or making it right if you need to. Any idea if any if anything has been done to address the EGR, oil cooler, or if a coolant filter has been added? If you listen to this guy, it could be worth a shot at that price and mileage.

That's way past what I would trust. It could go longer if it were a highway queen and meticulously maintained and not idled extensively or used for towing. 100% of shuttle buses I've seen with the 6.0 and that many miles were already on their 2nd motor. I certainly would pay a premium for that over a gasser.

Thanks for the feedback guys. It sounds like a gamble for sure being the van is at a dealer and there are no maintenance or service records. And it's in TX while I'm in MN.

If anybody is in the Dallas Ft Worth area and could take a look at it I'd compensate for your time.

I certainly wouldn't purchase a diesel for fuel saving alone. Price a complete new 6.0 motor and the price to bullet proof the thing. I spent 14k on mine and didn't even do a remote oil cooler or injectors. 14k will buy a lot of gasoline.

6.0 "Old Faithful"

You can't beat the 6.0 if just a few things are done. Best to do them early.
I have a local friend with a delivery business who has over 350,000 on his E-350.

#1 is simple scan to monitor temps - Oil and Coolant

#2 Filter Oil and Coolant - When I changed my first coolant filter it had a tablespoon of sand in it along with metal shavings.

#3 Vary RPM's and push it - Real easy to have your turbo build up with carbon if variable veins aren't "worked" This is especially true if you don't drive it often and it sits.

I agree. I feel like mine runs best when I've hammered on it for a stretch or two. Way smoother and more linear after its been driven for 500 miles straight then after its been sitting for 5 days straight.
