Un-detune 6.0 diesel?

Hi All,

Just curious, the 6.0 diesels in the vans have a stock 235hp and 440lb-ft of torque. As applied in the F250/350s the output jumps up a lot. About +90 and +110 respectively.

Can the van diesels be un-detuned to be closer to the truck's output without going with a 3rd party chip, and intake/exhaust mods? Are there driveline reasons for the detune to begin with? Is it moderately possible or is it prohibitively expensive?

Thanks,
Ray + my lovely wife + my 3 kids

Re: Un-detune 6.0 diesel?

The van's are not de-tuned. The HP and torque in the van are thr same as International rated trucks at, and they made the engine!

Ford hopped up the pickups, and the reliability of the engine in pickups has suffered as a consequence. Ford couldn't up the power in the vans because there is a problem with cooling more power in the van - just look in the engine compartment try to figure out how to move more cooling air through there.

My advice would be to leave it stock. Some have gone with aftermarketchips, etc. at the risk of reliability.

Your van, your choice.

Mike

Re: Un-detune 6.0 diesel?

Thanks Mike. I forgot about IH. I keep reading about the hp/torque wars currently going on and wondered why the vans had lower numbers. I never thought about the other way around, ie not detuned but up-tuned for trucks.

The 6.0L is a fickle beast when tuned. If you get one I recommend leaving it stock, get a scangauge and get a coolant filtration system and call it good. Oh ya, don't idle for long periods either.

The answer is Yes, you can bump HP to F-series levels with a tuner.

But I wouldn't do it to mine if I owned one...
