Warranty Claim Rejected - Rear U Joint

Had the rear U-Joint that connects the rear drive shaft to the rear differential replaced as it was shot and when questioned was told that it would not be honored under the 100K - 5 yr engine and drive train coverage as it was modified and is a 4x4. I argued that it was the stock Dana axle (LSD), U-Joint and rear drive shaft and shouldn't be denied just because it is hooked up to a Atlas T-Case, but they wouldn't cover it.

Just checking to see if this makes sense to any of you guys?

Re: Warranty Claim Rejected - Rear U Joint

If you are talking about the standard Ford warranty, not extended warranty, the 5 year 100,000 miles is NOT a powertrain warranty, it is the warranty on the diesel engine. The remainder of the powertrain has far less warranty coverage (off the top of my head, I think the transmission is covered for 36,000 miles).

Re: Warranty Claim Rejected - Rear U Joint

Need to correct that prior post of mine, it should be covered under the Powertrain 5 yr/ 60,000 mile Limited Warranty - but they refuse as stated above, because of the 4x4 modifications - yet I can't see how that applies to the rear u-joint on the rear axle/rear differential?

OK I can see your frustration, and no, that doesn't sound right to me. My point was that depending on your mileage, it may be a moot point anyway.

Jay Minto has been one of the best advocates for SMBs when it comes to Ford warranty claims. I'd give hime a call or shoot an e-mail.

Note to self: next Ford I buy, I'll contact Jay first.

Re: Warranty Claim Rejected - Rear U Joint

I can't speak for the '07 but on our '08 SMB West replaces the rear drive shaft when they do the 4x4 conversion. Because of the transfer case they have to shorten the drive line. This is probably why Ford is refusing to cover it.

Cheers,
John

Re: Warranty Claim Rejected - Rear U Joint

John is exactly right, rear drive shaft has been shortened to accommodate the 4x4 conversion - looks like no warranty coverage from Ford - could have been worse, parts and labor were only $200.

Re: Warranty Claim Rejected - Rear U Joint

Hopefully now they put in one that has a grease fitting, unlike the factory original.

Maybe if the van has been lifted the increased driveline angle and ujoint stress caused the failiure and that is Ford's reasoning.

Re: Warranty Claim Rejected - Rear U Joint

I'm pretty sure the Power-train warranty does not include U-joints. Even if it did, the driveline angles are not longer within stock spec, and therefore would not be covered.

Re: Warranty Claim Rejected - Rear U Joint

SMB has a 3/36 warranty on the 4x4 system they install, you might want to check with Heber if you're within the warranty period.
