Re: what axel ratio to pick?

I'm starting to wonder if I should have gone with the 4.10's. I had 3.55's before the conversion and went with the 3.73's because it put my rpm closest to stock after larger tires. Now that I have my van loaded down with all the essentials I sometimes wish I had gone with the 4.10's. At highway speeds 65 to 70 my rpm is in the 1800 to 1900 range. This works great on long flat highway cruises. Great mileage, comfortable, good power, etc. The problem comes when I get on the slower hilly or mountain roads. I either have to turn the overdrive off, or endure lots of downshifting. If I had tires any larger than 33" I would definitely go with the 4.10's.

2001 7.3 4x4
33" tires D rated 60psi
Weight 9860
Engine is all stock

Good luck, Tom.

What tire height is going on your rig?

Stumpy - I think 33" to 34" tire size - I haven't had chance to look at thread you started - thx in advance - I will do so tomorrow

Personally, I think 3.73 is a good gear ratio. Unfortunately, when I ordred my van the choices were 4.10 or 3.55, so I went with 4.10. Both my pickupshave 3.73 gears.

Mike
I would get 4.10, but I have no issues or problems yet with 3.73 with 285 size tires.. If I got bigger tires, I'd probably start feeling it..

Re: what axel ratio to pick?

I'd go wit 4:10's for sure. You don't want it lugged down and hunting between gears over small variances in terrain. FWIW my speedometer is nearly dead on according to my GPS with 4:10's and 315's.
