Would you buy a 7.3 with 300k miles?
Hey guys,
I'm looking to get a '99-03 E350 with the 7.3L
The one I'm currently looking at is an ex-CocaCola delivery van, recent service includes new injectors, glow plugs, fuel pump (mechanical) and rebuilt tranny (not sure of the rebuilt extend, vendor has shop receipt though)
It's got 290,000 miles. I know these are amazing engines but is it getting too high? She's not cheap but she's 4x4 and comes with a Ujoint 4" lift, full floating axle, newer axles...
The van will quickly get converted to run on veggie like the rest of my trucks.
Any inputs would be great!
Cheers,
Mr. D

Re: Would you buy a 7.3 with 300k miles?
those items replaced are all the things I was warned about when i started searching for a 7.3. so having those items relativily new would be a good piece of mind for me. a good buddy of mine has had a f350 with the 7.3 since around 99 and just turned 300k. his tranny cost him 2500 for a full rebuild about 25k ago. he hauled rvs around the country for a few years and we used it as a racecar hauler a lot between 02-07, usually 2 cars everywhere we went. other than that, its been pretty maintenance free other than a few cam sensors and typical balljoint replacements.
it was a fleet, so odds are good it was maintained pretty well, but who knows how it was driven. i know how i treat rentals, lol. if they can produce all maintenance records that would be a plus. i actually just tried contacting the company i got mine from to see if they can provide me any records. really hoping they will help me out, but not holding my breath. i cant even get quigley to get back to me with any info
i dont know how long these motors run for, but ive been told they are very relaible for a long time when maintained properly. main reason i got one myself. id be interested to know how high of miles you can rack up on them. gonna try and find out myself.
guess its gonna depend on price. but since i dont know that, i cant say wether id be weary or not. sounds like a good setup though. good luck with your decision!

I did. Bought my fully loaded smb with 290k. I'm not new to 7.3 so miles don't concern me. Like mentioned the key maintenance/repair items have already been addressed. The receipts would be key for me. Do some investigative work with those.

Holy crap. Based on that video the OP's engine should still have cross-hatch at 290k. Nice illustration of what low hp/liter and 6 head bolts per cylinder can do.

From U-Joint:

V3 is done & in the hands of it's new owner! I believe this is the most extensive build I've taken on. This van is a 2000 E350 7.3, and I purchased it from the 2nd owner. It had 785,000 miles on the clock when it came to UJOR.

Makes me feel better about my purchase. I couldn't tell based on the video narration how many miles that van has.

It it was maintained properly it should be good to go! Compression test wouldn't hurt, but that's not a simple task.
