Yet another oil thread

I have a 6L diesel with 50k on the odo and have been getting semi-synthetic Mobil 1 oil every 5k miles along with filter. Current shop says not to switch to fully synthetic but new guy that knows those engines wants to use Schaeffer fully syn oil and has had good luck.

If I go the syn route can I ever go back or would I even want to go back. For that matter, should I even change what I have been doing??

Inquiring minds want to know...
Bob

You can mix and match and go back and forth whenever you want to no issue.

That said... If you keep doing 5k intervals, full synthetic will have little benefit.

More important is to only use Ford filters, since many aftermarket options can allow excessive bypass, which causes the HPOP sump screen to plug with debris and eventually blow out (which damages the injectors, if not the HPOP itself).

Thank you sir! I do have the dual Amsoil filters and would go for a longer change cycle if the oil was up for it. Something like 7500 or so. I know the 2nd/possibly new technician says it can go longer but we'll have to see just how long he thinks. I no want no HPOP or IHOP problems.

If you really are interested in your oil's longevity, and therefore your engine's longevity, you can use a service like Blackstone Oil Analysis to tell you what condition your oil is in, how much longer you can go, and if there are any metals/contaminants in your oil and where they may have come from.

In this thread, I posted an oil analysis report from way back when so you can get some idea what it contains.

Typically these sorts of services are utilized by Diesel owners but I've considering using one for my gassers at some interval just to see what's what inside the motor.

With two 5.4's over 275K and one 5.4 that's a Ford reman'd and less than 2K miles so far I think it would be interesting to compare and contrast the results.
