Anyone ever use this heater / stove ?

I'm thinking this could kill 2 birds in my SMB - I have neither a furnace or a cooktop so this could be a nice solution.

Technology... wow... I had a buddy in the mid-70's that crammed a roll of toilet paper into a coffeecan, soaked it in alcohol, and used that for his heater in his raggedya$$ '68 F100.

Never knew that he had invented technology. We all laughed a lot, until one day after I had gotten in over the top of my hipboots while duck hunting. Barely able to make it back to the truck before serious hypothermia, opened the door and it was already warm inside. I nearly peed on myself!

Re: Anyone ever use this heater / stove ?

I'm all in favor of devices that fill more than one need, but I'm really skeptical that this could do much besides act as a hand warmer. A cast iron pot on a regular propane stove might heat up your van just as much, at a fraction of the cost. The camping manufacturer Century makes a stove/heater combo that puts out twice as much heat for under $50:

You'd have to have adequate ventilation, obviously. I use a Mr. Heater and a small Coleman stove; they take up a little more room than that alcohol stove but are much more powerful; and the Mr. Heater can just warm up the SMB. Anything smaller would probably not work very well.

BTW, don't seem to be any catalytic heater/stove combos. Never tried to heat something on mine, but kinda curious why there aren't at least catalytic stoves, since no CO.

Ah, back in the good old days, there were these:

You can run these on Etoh or Coleman fuel, catalytic and quite effective but AFAIK you still need ventilation even with a catalytic stove. Plenty of them for sale on ebay still, Coleman should reintroduce them since half the USA seems to think the end of the world is coming.

I still have one of those but they kinda scare me. At least with propane the fuel burns more completely. Those old Coleman heater were difficult to start, had to be lit outside because they produce a huge flame for about a half hour and never seemed to burn clean. Thay allways smelled slightly of burnt fuel.
