Re: Best water jugs?

There's always these too, which have a built in spout. No firsthand knowledge however.

Re: Best water jugs?

I'd highly recommend the LCI ones Herb listed. American made and basically pretty similar to the Scepter ones, which are made in Canada. The LCIs are significantly cheaper; $26 and free shipping if you get two at buylci.

LCI doesn't make 20L ones though, and no black. The olive is pretty dark though. LCIs have a bit of a different lid. The lids on mine sealed well, but you could always buy some gaskets if need be. A seller called jamte sells a bunch of accessories for them on eBay; kinda pricey though. Search my posts and you'll see how I modified mine to deliver water by pressure.

They also sell spare lids, here's a link to a spare lid:

LCI manufactures these mostly to gov't contractors; they're an organization specializing in employed blind people. These are WAY better than the aforementioned POS containers you get from Reliance and others. Might as well use ziplocks. You could probably paint the LCI or Scepters; I think they're HDPE. You could have one black and one tan side, and just turn one or other toward sun.

And once you get water containers with the big mouth you'll never go back to the others. Way more usuable.

Re: Best water jugs?

I'll second what Rob said...best container I've used. If you buy these from a rafting supply house they'll cost you double. The Reliance products used to be a lot better but it someone drops a full container it's toast. Just my thoughts. Barry

I think 2 of them fit exactly inside the top rails of the Aluminess baja box.
I like the shape of those, but I've probably had a dozen or so over the last 10 years and all of them have spring leaks after a while (not to mention the POS spouts which always crack at the base).

The do have a jerry can style water jug now which is infinitely more durable, except it still has the same spout
I have two that I've been using for 5-6 years and no issues. But they get used once per trip to top up the fresh water tank in the van, the rest of the trips they sit on the baja box.

Re: Best water jugs?

Just to add to the options, I bought four of these a few years ago and they have worked out fine:

Yep, that's a Scepter, or the Scepter-clone sold by LCI.

Re: Best water jugs?

Just got two Scepters from Lexington Container, which is conveniently one state away from me so I got them in one day. All I can say is Wow! These things are nice, super thick and well made. I can't wait to field test them. Very high quality stuff for $26/per. Also, the cap is huge and the vent is a nice feature.
