Black Out curtains DIY or buy

I have access to a sewing machine and someone who can pretty much sew anything. I'm looking to make or purchase window covers like the ones seen on this webpage https://diyadventurevanco.com/collec...ce-cockpit-kit

As you can see I have a lot of windows to cover. I have been a cabinet maker and finish carpenter for 30 years so I know a thing or 2 about making templates and creating a custom fit piece. What I don't know is if I can get the material cheap enough to justify the cost saving of making them myself.
Where to buy the material?
What is the material?
Does someone make something similar for the E series vans?

Morning Seattle350,

OK, have emailed the "expert"...the ex-wife. Would like her to make something like those for my SMB and then take down the installed curtains. She is real good and actually makes her own patterns and knows all about outdoor gear patterns, etc... Once she replies, will let you know.

Fortunately, you have a great resource for DIY fabric stuff right here in town (if you are in Seattle). They carry insulating and blackout material. Have your sewing expert take a look and estimate the cost for comparison. https://www.seattlefabrics.com/

It looks like Seattle Fabrics might have what you need. They have items specific to RV and Marine applications.

When we did my curtains, we just used blackout fabric with whatever cover fabric I wanted. The blackout material was pretty cheap. The cover material was a little more because of the type I wanted. I’d be inclined to purchase from a store you can visit, especially if you are trying to save some money. If you order online, you take some chances with the quality. Most stores will have a remnant area where you can purchase cheaply if you don’t care what it looks like.

I’ll be dropping by Seattle Fabrics this week. Seems a no brained to support a local place when I can.

I went the cheap way. I bought a roll of Reflectix insulation from my local home supply store and cut pieces to fit in each window.

Exactly - Reflectix should be part of the answer regardless of whether one goes stylish or inexpensive. So the the fabric store and home depot! There are lots of designs online but generally a reflectix layer, followed by cardboard for structure followed by some aesthetic pattern is a good approach.

I liked this approach. Fair warning - why people have to take pictures of their hideous feet, I will never know. https://ethanmaurice.com/blog/how-to...van-or-element

Thicker, rigid shades can take up a lot of room when you store them. Just a consideration....
