SMBDAD, it sounds like you have a 12 volt only rear air. The unit behind the sub-woofer is most likely the rear evaporator. This type system will only cool when the engine is running and the dash A/C is "on". It relies on the van's compressor to circulate refrigerant throughout the entire system.

Trek520, if the Starcool you have is connected to the van's factory A/C system, then they share the same refrigerant. There were some 110volt only Starcool's in the early '90's, much like the new Danhard system. If the systems are independent, then one could have R-12 and the other R-134a. If you do have R-12 in your Starcool system and want to convert it to R-134a, email me and I'll give you some insight into what needs to be done.
