Re: Composting toilet

If it doesn't use water, how do you keep the bowl clean? Wash it and let it go into the liquid tank? I would think it might take some skill keeping the liquids and solids separated.

Too bad there are no specs on the site. I wonder how big it is.

Re: Composting toilet

I looked at a Nature's Head toilet. The urine goes into a plastic bottle, the poop drops into a bin with some peat moss, and in theory, it gets broken down.

The good:

Very limited stuff to dump out. The urine bottle can be emptied on a toilet or another sanitary source.

No water needed, so no need to worry about winterizing.

In theory, the poop bin can be emptied out as dirt.

The bad:

It appears messy to empty out the poop bin.

You have to have bags of peat moss to kick-start the chemical reactions and replace them every time the bin is emptied.

The ugly:

The cost.

The fact that I've not seen spare parts, so if the urine bottle leaks or the poop bin breaks, that may be expensive.

Instead, I wonder about just a European style cassette toilet as a compromise.

Re: Composting toilet

We have been using this toilet setup for a little over a year now. Works great and happens to be the favorite part of the van for the Misses. We had a typical porta potty for a few months and she was not happy about it and neither was I.

I use the van as a daily driver/work vehicle and use the toilet everyday all day long for the urine part. The solid container only gets used on trips and it also works great with no smell. There is a small fan pulling air through the peat moss bin all the time and existing to the outside. The composting bin is fairly easy to empty and I only do it a couple times a year.

Re: Composting toilet

I'm interested in this but have yet to get any answers although I haven't called the manufacture. Normally you would wash down the bowl of a typical porta pottie with some kind of fluid which ends up in the holding tank. But this would be an issue with the peat moss correct?

I'd really like to get some measurements of it if it's not any trouble. My plan is to haul something like this on the back if it's not too heavy so no need for venting. I'd like to stow it in a box and it seems like this head is better than anything else I've seen.

Re: Composting toilet

Hi Dave, there is a great detailed PDF on their site with all the measurments.

The trap door that opens is fairly large so I have never needed to clean the bowl. It all drops down into the peat moss.

Re: Composting toilet

I think it was in the $900.00 range if I remember correct.

Re: Composting toilet

Yikes Brent...that's a pricy unit but seems fit my needs if it's not too large or heavy.
