Electric Hot water Heater Repair

Just took my 2010 Sprinter SMB in for what I thought was going to be an easy repair of the heater element. The tech says the heater is no longer made and replacement is not available. Does any one know what the current "100 volt fast recovery with bypass valve heater" is being installed? or recommendations that will fit within the same dimensions. Thanks

Do you need an entire new water heater, or just the element? If it's just the element, surely you could find one somewere.

If your SMB has the Insinkerator W152 water heater the standard replacement element was ISE part# 42671, however those are discontinued and VERY difficult to find these days. Some users report successfully substituting the Camco 02102/02103 as a replacement.

The replacement elements noted above are all 1" NPT right hand thread. Apparently a few variants of the W152 shipped with special left hand threaded copper elements. Not much chance of finding an element replacement for those.

Yep, that was the problem. Left handed thread. We decided to go with a new unit. It is turning out to be a much bigger project than I ever imagined.

Ouch, I was afraid that might be the case.

But please update us on the final solution when you finish the replacement project. I expect most of us with the ISE water heaters will be facing this problem within the next few years.

Not sure if this will help your situation or not but I saved this thread link for when I tackled adding hot water to my build. Scroll down a bit to where Boy Wonder mods a standard hot water heater by adding a 12v element. Then maybe go back and read the whole thread from the beginning.

Just an FYI. I ended up replacing with an AO Smith. SMB Austin suggested either that or the Rheem. Both require replumbing.

If it is an INSINKERATOR, you can pick up a new element at Lowes for only $10. I used it in mine, same volts and output. Utilitech Water Heater Screw Element
Item # 146227 Model # 9008069046
