Not totally necessary but it has its advantages. It adds another level of control for the heater and works up to 13,100 ft.

from the manual:
"After starting the heater, the air pressure sensor cyclically measures the atmospheric air pressure and transfers
the measured values to the heater's control box.
The control box analyses the measured values and if
necessary adjusts the metering pump's fuel delivery rate
to the current, atmospheric air pressure.
The delivery rate is reduced from approx. 1400 m, this
simultaneously causes a reduction in the heating output
by approx. 9 % per 1000 metres."

It will work up to 6K feet OK, after that it can start to smoke black and soot up the combustion chamber and may have issues with it wanting to light..

Can you turn the altitude kit on/off? We are not above 6000 ft very often but I will not want to do without hot water when we are.

I don't have either (yet) but my limited research led me to believe that the Espar needs a separate "kit" but the Webasto just needs its settings to be changed. Dealer should be able to set it up- not sure if you can do it yourself. That's one reason I'm leaning toward webasto.

The Espar Hi Altutude kit senses pressure and adjusts when needed. It is "automatic". There is no manual on-off switch.

We have one on our D4 and have not had any problems with altitude.
