Flate Plate Circulation Pump Leak

Searched but couldn't find any other threads where the coolant circulation pump that heats the flate plate for the rear shower was leaking. I have tightened the two bottom bolts and this helped for a while but it started leaking again.

Was seeking any advice on possibly just replacing the seal on the bottom or maybe I have to replace the whole unit.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Scott

Re: Flate Plate Circulation Pump Leak

That's the pump where you don't need the Espar?

Re: Flate Plate Circulation Pump Leak

Mine leaked a little when it was new. I did open it up and cleaned the seal. It stopped leaking after that. That's when I discovered the coolant lines were rubbing against the frame.

Re: Flate Plate Circulation Pump Leak

Yea, that is the coolant pump where by you just use the residual heat from the coolant to heat the shower water going through the flat plate. I did install the new shower head sold by Adventure Trailers this summer and it works great - no more scalding or wasted water as you have complete control over the mixing of hot/cold.

I will contact SMB and see if I can get a part number or make of the pump and get some seals coming before I go to the trouble of taking it apart.

Re: Flate Plate Circulation Pump Leak

Boy, fixing this leak is a tough one. Peter @ SMB wasn't much help. He stated they don't use the coolant pump anymore, I'm guessing but I think they use the Espar flat plate set up. He said they used to get them from Port Supply, but looks like they don't have them anymore. I'm just trying to gain access to the pump and find a manufacturer's number or possibly clean up the seals.

Trying to get the metal housing that holds the pump on is a problem. I'm pretty sure they have nuts inside the body of the van that the bolts are screwed into and not sheet metal screws. I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure out how to gain access to those nuts. Just to the rear of the pump is a drain with some of the floor material screwed on and underneath that is what looks like foam insulation. Possibly if you scrapped all this out you could get your arm back in there with a wrench and get hold of the nuts.

Just checking to see if anyone else had removed their circulation pump and just how they got the metal housing off that supports the pump?

Re: Flate Plate Circulation Pump Leak

Just in case somebody else ever has to service their circulation pump to the flate plate, Groco makes a service kit (CP-20) that has all the seals, etc and that solved my coolant leak problem - much cheaper than buying a new one ($50 vs $210). Best to take a couple of pictures as you disassemble the pump so you get all the new parts back in place.

It was quite the pain to get the pump un-bolted from the body of the van as the nuts are real hard to get access too.

Re: Flate Plate Circulation Pump Leak

This is what we have been using for the last 7 years. The only seal is and o-ring where the head meets the body of the pump. The pump is a mag drive so no shaft seal is needed.

Re: Flate Plate Circulation Pump Leak

I use the one from Greg. Seems so much more…manageable than that large metal bracketed one. Easy install, small space used, quiet.
