Re: Propane furnace problem

We've used ours at Mammoth Lakes (elevation 7900) and Tioga Pass (elevation 9000) in the past without problems...

Re: Propane furnace problem

One of the main problems for the suburban starting has been battery voltage. As the voltage goes down the RPM of the fan/blower goes down. This prevents the air vane switch from closing thus not letting the system light. This is exasperated at altitude, so the same conditions at sea level may not start at say 6000 ft. If your battery is a little low, you can start the van thus raising the voltage while you get the furnace going, when you turn off the van it should still have enough RPM to keep the air vane closed. This of course only helps if you are trying to warm up the van, it won't help if trying to keep it cycling throughout the night. Also make sure there is nothing impeding airflow both exhaust and interior as the same thing could happen.

Re: Propane furnace problem

Well both the furnace and hot water worked fine at 6600 ft.

The furnace fan is pretty hard on the extra battery, as noted.

Re: Propane furnace problem

Love our suburban furnace. Ran it at 8000 feet often this weekend while camping with zero trouble.

What model furnace do you have? We live at 5,500ft and camp almost always at above 9,000ft-13,000ft. I'm looking to add a furnace to my SMB and need to find one that will work well at altitude.

Re: Propane furnace problem

The same Suburban Furnace everyone else has. We spend at least one week out of the year camping in the San Juans around Silverton. No Problems.
