Range Hood or whatever

My van did not come with a range and I would like to add one. However glancing at pictures I don't see that Sportsmobile includes a hood, just what looks like a some stainless above the stove.

Can someone share a picture of what I need to do?

thanks
nick

Range Hood or whatever

Nick

Here is the setup in my 89 E150.

The stove top is 29" off the floor and the SS panel that protects the upholstery is 20-1/2" above the stove top and is 24" long and 7-1/2" wide.

I am surprised it is just the top piece and not the side as well. But this is enough?

Re: Range Hood or whatever

Sportsmobile installs the shinny metal as a heat shield to protect easy to melt and and burn fabrics from a potential grease fire, hot spatters or overheated skillet. A range hood with exhaust fan seems like overkill to me for a small van size RV and something that will rattle on the road and have to be maintained. We cook outside when frying or grilling is required as we don't want the van and our gear to smell like stale bacon or stir fry and because we camp and live in bear country -don't want to attract the bruins to our van in the middle of the night while camping or parked in our driveway, they might tear up the vents or PT trying to get to the source of the food aroma.

Re: Range Hood or whatever

We do a fair amount of indoor cooking, including bacon and the like. If possible, we have the side doors open (our stove is just inside the side doors), but we generally run the Fantastic Fan during the cooking. The fan is more effective than you would think at keeping the cooking vapors from permeating the interior fabrics, and we haven't had a bear issue yet.

Of course, I wouldn't go so far as to do anything that deliberately creates smoke, such as blackened fish -- for that stuff, we carry a portable butane stove.

The propane cooktop instructions will tell you what are the safe clearances to combustible surfaces around and above the unit. I think the SST shield is installed above the cooktop because it is too low for a combustible surface. These are minimums to prevent the surface from catching on fire. Grease can and will splatter a lot further than that.

Nick,

I believe Sportsmobile will not install the fan on penthouse tops, but I'd call and check. If not, they may have an alternative.

I will call about the stainless. I wondered if everyone has stainless or aluminum. I can't tell by the pictures, but from what everyone says it sounds like stainless. I hope they have some pre-made to sell and I better get it now. It is the last year of the Econoline. If they have to install it I will have to make a trip.

thanks

Mine is a little different plus has a trim around it. Any metal shop should be able to fab it up for you. Might be cheaper that way. Even a local RV shop should be able to do the install if you don't want to.
