My van uses 2 NSB-M12-130 Northstar batteries. http://www.northstarbattery.com/hd_marine.php
I installed both the batteries and the Isotherm ASU fridge. I know that they will run the fridge for a week because I used the van for more than a week before I had the electrical system finished and I had the batteries just temporary wired to the fridge so we could use the fridge.
And there was no turning on the van or recharging in any way? Wow. I challenge anyone else here to have fridge runtimes anywhere close to that! Granted, I think you've got twice the battery I have, but even brand new, I couldn't go much more than a day.

Appears to me that by installing this higher efficient unit would offset the cost of a 2nd solar panel. If its close to a wash cost wise, I would rather attack the power drain problem at its source (the refrigerator) rather than just generating more power to handle a less efficient refrigerator.

Amen. Not just a cost wash, but added weight and increased wind resistance.

When I ran my fridge for a week I did not recharge the batteries at all. They were only temporarly wired directly to the fridge. Keeping the fridge full makes it much more efficient also. I also add frozen food from my freezer every day to eat the next day.

You do realize that adding frozen food decreases the temperature of the system, thus requiring less energy to bring the system to/keep it at the set point. Depending on how much frozen food you moved in and how much colder it was than the fridge it could significantly affect your longevity.
Agreed J. The end of all this is that unless we instrument both fridges under similar conditions, we'll never know for sure. The only thing I DO know is that mine sucks.
