Storage layout?

Hi guys,
So my buddy's build-out of Sprortsmobile Classic #8 will start in November.
They're field biologists and want to maximize storage in the back of the van. They're looking at having a goucho behind the drivers seat so they can relax and take in the view while sipping coffee in the morning and will have the stove-top and sink on the opposite wall. That leaves the back open for action-packers and all their gear.

I told him I'd start a thread asking for photos of how people organize their storage needs. Even if the layout is different, he can get some inspiration from how different people have handled the limited space in their rigs.

Thanks for any input, I'll point him toward this thread and bug him about signing up himself!

-Mark

I had an RB30 layout, similar layout to what you describe. The problem with the gaucho (at least in the Ford Econoline) was that the side wall curves in so it isn't comfortable sitting in the gaucho. You have to slouch or sit sideways and lean up against an adjacent cabinet or driver's seat to get comfortable. Just something to think about before spending all that money to build. Maybe the SMB Classic wont be so curved in, I don't know.

As far as storage, I would recommend ending the cabinets a couple feet before the back doors. If you have cabinets going all the way to the back, your storage space is extremely limited.

Well worth a trip to Overland Expo for your friends to see a significant number of rigs firsthand, even if they aren't "Classics".

They're up in Lompoc. I was thinking a Jalama get-together for the same reason.

Where and when is the Overland Expo?

Last I knew it was near Flagstaff, sometime in May.

This is what we did with our EB50. Had SMB build the interior same as an RB. That leaves about 20" depth in the rear floor to ceiling for action packers and assorted gear. We pack it to the brim on longer trips and don't have anything to chase around in the cabin when stopped. Highly recommended.

Here ya go:
EB walkthrough. Porta Potti stores passenger side rear corner. Driver rear corner (propane tank normally stores in rear outside box) stores back packs, ski boots, etc. Hooks at driver side rear cabinet surface hangs heavy jackets, smaller packs. Under floor is 55 gals worth of space. Driver side has couch,4 cu ft Truck Fridge, microwave, 2200 watt inverter, Espar D4, and factory rear air/heat. Passenger side has sink, counter (30 inches high) where we put the Iwatani stove when needed, 20 gals of water tanks, 4 gal hot water heater, and a 50l National Luna chest fridge / freezer we use as a freezer.

Storage is under couch, numerous cubbies are sized to hold plastic bins, and rear driver side three large cubbies for bags with clothes and other gear. Has worked out well. This is the rough-in for dimensions / layout, etc. Final build will just make it all look nice and convert some spaces to drawers and cabinets.

Great idea Joe, I'll bet he didn't think about swapping out the EB layout for the RB. The app Sportsmobile has him working out his layout on had the stove-sink counter-top extending way back into the back of the van.

Thanks for the photos 1der!
