Swivel Seat Base Question

I want to add a swivel seat base to the passenger side of my van. I see in some threads it raises the height of the seat. Is this true? Who supplies SM with seat bases? What is the best one to use?

Thx

I'm fairly certain that the seats and bases are stock Ford items...

I'm not sure where smb gets theirs from but i bought mine from http://www.discountvantruck.com/rvvanpa ... tbases.htm

It's a nice swivel seat base, well made, definitely no complaints. I think it does raise the height of the seat an inch or two but it's not really noticeable.

Ours came with the truck from Ford before the truck arrived at SMB. ( I have the window sticker) So yes, they are stock Ford items that you "should" be able to buy or order at your local dealer.

These guys claim that you can't use swivel seats in any vehicle younger than a 1992...

"Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standard (FMVSS) 208 was set by the Department of Transportation in 1992 to reduce the injuries caused during collisions involving van conversions. Van conversions created after 1992 must have all seating and tables locked down to the floor. Also, captain's chairs can no longer swivel. Adapters are available for pre-1992 vehicles."

It just says "CAPTS CHAIRS DUAL W/O TRIM" $125.00 under optional equipment. I dont see a line item code or number of any kind.

That is just an option code for the seats themselves. On the RV prep van it can be ordered with no seats at all I believe. The swivel bases are not a ford product. I bought mine from SMB and installed them myself. I do not know if SMB is the actual manufacturer however.

swivel seat bases

Sorry it took me so long to chime in. Here is the info on the swivel seat bases;
They are made by Kustom Fit who will not sell them retail, you would need to purchase them from SMB.
They are a direct replacement for the factory Ford base. Ford supplies the incomplete seats in the RV Pkg., but not the swivel base.
RV's are allowed to have front swivel seats, non-RV's are not (unless the base is installed in a van for someone with special needs).
As an individual owner, you can install the swivel base yourself, but I would re-install the factory non-swivel base before I sold the van for liability reasons.
The swivel base is a direct replacement for the factory base and does not change the height of the seat.

I hope this helps!

I got mine from Discount Van Truck, LTD, 800-414-0485, Item code #11363, $159.95 plus tax and shipping, $197.15 total. Bolts to seat and floor without raising the seat. Took me about 30 minutes. Works fine.
The only caution is in routing the airbag sensor wire. It's almost too short. At some point I will splice in an extra 6" of lead so I don't worry about breaking the wire when I swivel the seat.
When you remove the factory base lift the carpet and re-direct the wire to the rear of the base then mount the swivel base. Then set the seat onto the swivel base and tighten down and reconnect the wire to the seat.
If you don't do this the airbag is effectively disabled.
