Only trouble I've ever had was a sheriff waking me in the middle of the night to tell me I might have trouble with a tweeker in the area. Unless he was said tweeker, the trouble never materialized.

I disperse camped a lot on public BLM land (Bureau of Land Management) in CA. It's legal and you'd never get a ranger knocking.

There's a lot all over CA and they're almost never packed, well, because there's really nothing around.

I enjoy the isolation though.

Garage
Had a patrolling Ranger stop & approach us just once, and logically we anticipated getting the boot. He actually drove by us about and hour earlier and offered a polite wave of the hand as he passed. Told us it took about an hour to talk himself into returning. He explained he couldn't help himself - enthusiastically requested info about the Van, which ultimately let to a tour. We all had a good time!
Think you're more apt to have similar encounters

That's been my exact experience. I always see the tweeker looking people at the spots that are easy to get to and not very far out of the city. I think most of them are just looking for a place to party and/or live. I've never had any issues once we get off the beaten path.

Absolutely. Way more problems in town than in the boonies.

Same here. What's funny though is when in town or near people. Folks will want to check my van out but they stay 10-15' away in a circle. Like it's a DeLorean that just appeared out of no where. I often sense people are a little afraid of it for some reason. I don't know why but I don't mind having people leave it alone. Except if there's a drunk guy. Drunk guy will always be right up on the windows or crawling underneath yelling "it's 4 wheel drive".

Don’t let it worry you. Not Rally of course, he worries everyone. We live in the east where dispersed camping is hard to find but with the internet and phone apps I do pretty well. My wife and I always travel to in the Western US in the summer and boondock as much as we can.
Go with your gut. If it’s doesn’t feel right move on.
