Four Wheel Camper to SMB!

Hi Everyone from Half Moon Bay, CA!

New to the forum. My wife and I are expecting our first child in February so we sold our Four Wheel Camper recently and are looking at a SMB. We are scheduled to tour the Fresno factory in early January and review designs.

After owning 2 FWC's over the past 6 years we are ready for a more versatile van for weekend trips surfing/biking/kiting/camping but also for extended Baja surf trips with the kiddo. We really were sick of popping up all the time.

We are leaning towards a transit mid roof quigley even though the adventurer in me wants the classic 4x4 ford cut away. The 90% weekender 10% off grid and mpg has me at this conclusion but still debatable.

On the East Coast now, but one of my favorite places in the US is Half Moon bay - was our "get outta town" destination when I was much younger.

How tall are you? My understanding is the transit mid roof is only about 5'4" inside. You said you were sick of popping up all the time, are you planning a pop top? If not, you will likely have to do a high roof transit to be able to stand comfortably inside. Just a thought.

I thought there was a bit more head room in a midroof Transit, but I'm not sure. 86scotty's is a midroof and I've been in it. Anyway, easy enough to figure out if it will work for you when looking.

Spec is 72” interior height. So less than 6’ once floor, insulation, headliner, etc.

After all said and done you'll be at 671/2 to 68. I just measured one we have in the shop. Has floor in, insulation and wood headliner, if we used carpet as the head liner it would be 68".

We are aware that standing up will not be an option with a mid roof and not too concerned with that. Definitely not doing a pop top. Still weighing our options. Thanks!

Exactly, which I assume is why we both have fixed tops

I had a pop top SMB and now a Fixed raised roof SMB. I sure like the ability to stand up but then I am over 3/4 century old with arthritis - i.e., probably much older than you. But back in my early 60's the pop top got tiresome.
