New Member & New Ambulance Conversion Project - 2000 E350, 4wd, 7.3L, 18,600 miles

Hey SMB fans. New member here from Lincoln, NE. I just picked up a 2000 E350 ambulance in an online auction. 4wd, 7.3L diesel, 18,600 miles.

The new rig is pretty unique coming from a rural fire department in Colorado. Body is in perfect shape and it has only left the shed on emergency calls or so I was told. I am looking at converting it over to an adventure van here very soon. I want to do it right but also without getting TOO crazy on expenses. Will be looking at either painting or wrapping it, new bumpers, rock sliders, tires/wheels and then some interior work(outdoor shower, dsl heater, fridge, etc). Also want to make the roof a little less ambulance like and am looking for ideas there. I know that’s a lot and will be breaking that all down a little more specific later.

My wife and I dipped our toes into the adventure van scene with a 2000 e350 2wd with 100k miles a couple years ago. It has the V10 and I converted it over to a camper van. We put right at 25k miles on it in 2 years and decided we were ready to invest in the 4wd. We will be selling the old van soon.

Here’s a few pics of the new rig. Looking forward to getting started on it soon. I would appreciate any advice I can get on it before I start to save myself some $$ and headache. Especially major do’s and don’t’s.

Damn that thing looks pristine. Good score.

Given that it was run so infrequently, don't be surprised if you have a few oil minor leaks. 7.3's have some small leaks in general, but with an engine with so few miles, it wouldn't surprise me if some of the seals have dried up.

We look forward to your build.

Welcome! Good looking ride.

I would recommend reading up on David's build, he also has an ambulance.

I've always admired the organization of the built-in's on those rigs. Hard to imagine they put on less than 1K miles/yr, now to your benefit. Looking forward to see how you move forward with your build. Welcome.

The organization in the wiring alone is incredible really. Thank you!

You now have a license to speed, do a U-tun almost anytime and park anywhere you want. Also get in the left lane and the traffic will part for you in an almost biblical fashion. I had an ambulance and am now on my second. Use your powers for good not evil. And ENJOY!
