For books, go for Blue Highways, can't remember the author. I posted on it here years ago and the thread took off. Search away if interested.

Blue Highways! Such a great book.

An uber-progressive-and-thoughtful-minded Aunt handed me that book, right after I graduated college. She put it in my hands with an insistent grin...saying "you WILL enjoy this...especially for where you're going."

...and where was that? A long-planned-for, solo, one-month coast-to-coast-and-back road trip. In a hastily-made-roadworthy....ish....beat-up old slant-six Dodge Dart*....acquired just 3 weeks before.

Eagerly read that fantastic book along the way, going West and then back East, at every stop I could. (Old-school, real-paper-pages-flipping style).

So yeah. +1 here for that book.
Can definitely attest, as well, to the wondrous quality of that book, when paired to a significant road trip....one that mingles anticipation in equal parts of both giddy excitement and giddy uncertainty.

May those gloriously-adventurous miles treat you well!!!

* this was a carefully-decidedly-chosen-upon, specifically-belovedly-pathetic little car.....one that I felt was the perfect "modern enough to most likely get the job done, but old and idiosyncratic enough to force you to really feel the miles you cover" kind of machine. A contraption as reliable as perhaps your most entertaining (but sometimes forgetful) friend. A machine that was truly the most perfect to see most of Americas roads and geography for the first time in....to kind of "earn" the distance....and really truly burn in the poignant excited minute-to-minute memories (and challenges) of each place.

Solo or Company?

To me, it depends on whether I'm alone or have company.

Alone, I like all my music blasted loud, especially The Eagles, The Who, Garth Brooks, and lots of Broadway stuff that I can sing along to... Beauty and the Beast is my latest favorite.

With company, it seems easier to listen to podcasts and Audible. For podcasts, we like Radio Lab and This American Life. Audible is any book we agree we might like.

What a blast. Enjoy!

T-minus a couple of days and counting!!! My wife agreed to come with me for the adventure! I am so stoked! Sadly we won't be doing any meandering on this trip....Gotta pretty much bee-line it from Montana to Vermont....Slight diversion to stop in PA to see our son for dinner (or breakfast depending on our rate of travel...)

Playlist construction underway.......

Thanks for all of the suggestions!

Mission accomplished! Lots of good music heard, also listened to the book "Bat" by Joe Nesbo...Left Bozeman MT on Tuesday AM and drove approx. 2,597 miles...arriving home in VT on Thursday ~5:00PM...1997 E350 now has 214K some odd miles on it!

performed flawlessly without a hiccup.....
