Re: 1990 Ford SMB e250 - newbie potential purchase

Rust under the top is probably penthouse rub, not water collection.

The bed is not really wide enough to sleep two, not two adults anyway if my brother's Sprinter is any indication. Pretty easy to get the width and pretend at home, see how you fit/sleep on that little space.

Looks super clean.

Good point. Anyone know the width of the penthouse bed?

Re: 1990 Ford SMB e250 - newbie potential purchase

I think the 460 engine is great. I have a 460 in my Jet boat.

Is this an extended version ? There was one on Craigslist in the Classified section recently that looked the same but had a salvage title I think with damage on the rear for about $13K also.

Looks good. If extended, it may give you more room to store stuff.
I know that SMB west up in Fresno can replace the penthouse bolts for a reasonable price.
They also did great work on my prior Dodge SMB for penthouse related work...

Good luck as it looks great.

On my '06, the PH bed size is shown below. I wouldn't think it would be too different on a '90, but no guarantees.

Just by a quick calculation, my 5.4 will travel the same miles for only about $40 less. I'm interested in this partly because I just bought a 460 van too. Having all that power may just be worth it to you. It's a pretty reliable and maintenance free engine too, especially with that few miles, and especially compared to a diesel. Read some horror stories on here on diesel maintenance and then happily spend a little more on regular gas!

Dang - that's about as wide as a double bed. Don't think my wife and I could squeeze up there. Are some penthouses wider than others? Have any of you slept up top with another adult?

Wooly

Ours is an 89 with similar mileage and a 350 engine. We paid $5000 for it three years ago. The interior is has a different layout with no microwave or fridge. The price sees a bit high. I agree that you should have an independent mechanic look at it. When I took ours to our mechanic he said it was I. Good shape and if something does go wrong the parts are plentiful and inexpensive. We get about 14 mpg. Good luck and keep us posted on what you wind up with. It took us 9 months to find one with he layout we wanted.

If you want a wider PH bed you 'll have to find or have Colorado Camper Van make you a rig. The supports in the SMB dictate how wide your bed can be.
