2006 Chateau Quigley 6.0L, 40k miles

Hello,

I am thinking about the purchase of this van with the intention of a pop top conversion and a transformer type setup.

The owner has no maintenance records but said he replaced the oil with synthetic every 5k.
He said it needs tires and rotors but otherwise it has had no problems.
I know this has been debated to death on here, but am I stepping into a world of hurt if I purchase this van and try to make it into a camper? I am not interested in big bumpers or any of that gear, but rather look a little more low key.

He is asking $26,500... should I jump on this puppy?

Seems like if you want the diesel for whatever reason, that appears to be an OK deal. I paid about 30K for that vehicle not counting the 4x4 conversion. 40,000 mi is just scratching the surface.

Are you familiar with the 6.0?

I have never owned a 6.0.
I am enamored with the diesels for their durability and better fuel economy.
What gives me some heartburn is the 6.0 reputation.
I really want a bombproof vehicle for the wilderness... not rock crawling, but going way out of cell tower range.

The noise alone might make you change your mind when that fan kicks in. Also, I'm more worried about being stranded with engine trouble than some of the sheer dropoffs I'm driving on. There are ways to help the 6.0 with engine problems...So far I've been lucky and have always been on pavement. I never knew about fuel additives until after I had problems with the EGR and injectors. The AMSOIL problem didn't affect me because I was changing the oil every 3-4K at the time. No turbo problems yet but they did go through it one time because it was off. But I love the sound of the engine and like the way it crawls. If I do some of the bullet proofing stuff, I think it will be a solid runner. I have several friends that have done it and it's a good engine...just costly to start out with. That said, anybody can score a lemon...gas or diesel.

Good luck on your choice
