aluminess tire carrier question

is it possible to install the aluminess tire carrier for the stock bumper without attaching it to the door hinge? i don't want to drill out the door hinge and do all that to my 2014 van so if not i may try to go an alternate route such as what colorado camper van did with their rear bumper with tire carrier.

my issue is i like the look of the stock bumper and not one for the offroad bulky rear bumpers. just wanted to carry my spare tire on the rear of the van. thank you for any help!

It's certainly possible but you may find it a bit flimsy when It's not tied to the upper hinge.

Yeah, while it's technically possible to install, but it won't actually be strong enough to hold a spare.

The aluminess is gonna give you the best option for just adding a tire carrier. I have not seen the CCV tire carrier by itself, but they have a video where they use the big steel spindles which will require you to drill and weld your bumper.

The aluminess is made to tie to the door hinge. The gauge aluminum they use will eventually fatigue and crack if you don't tie it to the hinge.

I wouldn't would use the tire carrier without the upper support. I think it's still a little flimsy with it with the 285 tire on there right now.

Garage
just go to a junkyard and get a spare hinge to drill out and practice on. I kept my original hinge in a box for if I ever remove the carrier. keep in mind theres at least 2 different style hinges, but they seem to bolt up using the same holes.

thank you all for the quick replies. thats what i was afraid of. i didn't think the aluminum would hold up well to carrying the spare tire without the top hinge holding it.

the ccv bumper i don't mind much because it isn't all that bulky its about the size of the stock bumper, and doesn't have the tubes surrounding the rear tail lights.

i wonder if its possible to buy those steel spindles and make a tire carrier that will fit my stock bumper. maybe make it similar to ccv unit and reinforce it to the frame of the van. probably would be best if i found someone to build it for me since I'm not great with steel and welding.

i did just come across someones youtube video of their home mad rear bumper with the same sort of steel spindles

I don't know where you are located, but if you are in or near Southern California, theres a guy that is building custom bumpers and racks that's posted on here. He may be able to make something for you if he doesn't already have a product that fits what you're looking for.

Just buy a very light duty trailer spindle, lots of options / mounting methods out there.

It's nothing too complicated - a local welder should be able to fab something up for you if you bringing them pictures or even a cardboard mockup of what you want.

i am from the east coast, howell new jersey to be exact. I'm going to look into those spindles and see if i can find a build thread on them. if anyone has or knows of any build threads and doesn't mind posting it i would appreciate it. that may be my best option. maybe making a steel L bracket weld the spindle to it and mouth the other end to my frame. then use a spring loaded pins for the locking mechanism.
