Better to buy theirs or BYOV?

If you were going to buy a new conversion van (Ford E350, say), would you bring your own new van to them to work on or have them buy a new one for you?

Also, if you ask them to install a lift package on this vehicle, do you think they would be able to do that?

Re: Better to buy theirs or BYOV?

You can do either, so if you can find a good deal on a van it might be worth looking into. Some people even just bring in the van to have the top done by SMB then have all the other work done by others or themselves. There are several companies that do lifts/4x4 conversion other than SMB. It's up to you.

Re: Better to buy theirs or BYOV?

When I looked into that question, SMB got a better price on vans than I could.

Re: Better to buy theirs or BYOV?

SMB only does SMB4x4, for example Buji bought a van, had SMB convert then took it up to S&K to have the 4x4 done. Any variation works, you can even have the PH done by Sportsmobile and the interior done by another company, etc. the only thing SMB has that other companies don't offer is the exact PH that somewhat defines them, but even that has alternatives like GTRV.

Shopping used solves almost all of that, but you can't probably get exactly what you want.

If you are going to convert to 4x4. Select the 4x4 conversion that is right for you. Then, if you are going to go bargain shopping for a van. Make sure the one you choose will work with their conversion. For instance, SMB West can't do 4x4 with a side sliding door. Quadvan can. Etc, etc, etc...

Re: Better to buy theirs or BYOV?

SMB West buys their vans at fleet prices and I doubt you'd be able to purchase a van yourself for a price even close. As I recall, the markup was minimal (maybe only to cover delivery). They will tell you exactly how much the van would cost you...its not a secret!
