CARRYING GASOLINE ON BOARD

Hi:

I have 2 new NATO Jerry cans on my rear bumper (empty right now). What are the regs for carrying gasoline in these? Does it vary state to state? Fed regs apply? I see people carrying propane tanks on the exterior of their mobile homes....so I guess this is legal.

I suspect that it is a state by state issue since it would be covered under the Vehicle Code which should be online for your state. You see landscape maintenance pickups with cans of gasoline for their lawn movers and blowers all of the time so I can't believe that there are any laws against it.

Federal DOT requires gasoline be carried in RED cans. Most states have also adopted this requirement. The reasoning for this is to protect first responders after an accident.

Have never had an issue in not carrying gasoline in in red cans, but it could be used as an excuse to pull you over, just like not having mudflaps.

I've used red Wedco cans, old NATO jerrycans that I painted, and a variety of Scepter cans, some of which are red, and some of which only have a red strap on them. I'm using Scepters almost exclusively now, so at a minimum, I'll always make sure to use the correctly colored strap on them depending on if I'm carrying gas (red strap) or diesel (yellow strap), if not the properly colored cans themselves.

BTW, fuel cans are an easy target for thieves, so keep them locked up.

But how would they know that you had gasoline in them if they aren't red?

But I agree completely with the need for red fuel cans for first responders.
