CO North Front Range camping advice requested

Hello Folks.

I'm looking for a suggestion on a camping location. Our ideal for this trip is: Boondocking next to a lake/creek/river/water where a 5yr old would have a good time swimming and splashing around with the dog. Hopefully with some simple rock climbing nearby. We're not into big developed campgrounds but would be happy in a smaller campground.

In a couple of weeks I have a family visiting (complete with a rambunctious 5yr old & a climbing teen). They are adventurous and we were considering backpacking camping and lots of scrambling around -- but my wife has a recently cracked fibula. So we'd like to back off and find a more relaxed van based adventure. I'm having trouble finding something with water and since I don't have time to scout the trip first I'm hoping somebody has suggestions.

Thanks all!
max dot pritikin at gmail dot com or here would be great

The van isn't fireproofed (and although we do have a nice fire extinguisher it probably isn't up to spec for putting out _these_ fires).

I guess i'll wake up my own brain and find some fun. Shouldn't be too hard.

Cheers all. I hope you had a good 4th.

The only area I really know in Colorado is the Cache la Poudre River

Been there a couple of times but never really boon docked. The camps can be anywhere from nice to a zoo. A good friend lived in Fort Collins and told me of several places to hunt so there must be some good trails.

Re: CO North Front Range camping advice requested

Now I really have to amend my post.

Headed to the Trinity River for a day of kayaking this morning and got stopped at what I assumed was road construction.

But the backup lasted ... and lasted for 45 min. When they finally let traffic thru we went round the next bend and saw nothing but smoke. It was burning all the way down to the highway with rocks and burning logs rolling down to the edge of the road.

The river was too smoky to enjoy and was closed anyway for helicopters to get down and fill buckets. Turned around and waited another 1/2 hour to get back past the fire.

Worst smoke since the '08 fire season when it burned for 6 weeks.

Total bummer.

I'll also amend my post...there was heavy fire along the Cache la Poudre River, so call before heading there or anywhere in Colorado
