Cracked Windshield

Anyone have any experience with having a crack in the windshield repaired? On my last trip I was hit by a rock. The star has expanded to a crack that is 10" long. Some websites say 6" is the longest they can repair, while others claim they can fix a 24" crack. Looking for some advice.

Re: Cracked Windshield

That seems a little long for a repair Charlie, but I've seen some of the windshield places offer a fixit or it's free. Course, if they can't fix it, it might then be so bad you'll have to replace. But, might be worth a chance???
When I was running fleets, we never had much luck with repairs once they started cracking. Stars, yes. Cracks, very few worked.

Re: Cracked Windshield

Over the winter, my SMB windshield got two stars from flying gravel. Got both filled before our spring Mojave Desert trip.

On the way back north on US95 in Nevada, got a 10 inch long crack from gravel hitting the driver's side end post. Two shops couldn't repair that so it was a new windshield for me last week, before the upcoming Moab trip. I had to pay the $125 deductible with Progressive, but it was worth it.

Re: Cracked Windshield

There are some insurance companies (not mine) that waive the deductible for windshield repair/replacement. Probably worth checking into with your insurance carrier.

Re: Cracked Windshield

We lost a windshield to a rock coming up Tioga Pass a couple of years ago. We've had small "holes" repaired (Allstate paid for them) and they worked out fine. But if you get a crack, it is unrepairable in my opinion. I seem to recall that Allstate waived the deductible on the replacement too. Allstate may have suggested a windshield repair company and they came out and replaced the windshield while at work.

Re: Cracked Windshield

We got a chip/crack last week when on our road trip. Checked with our insurance this morning and was told if it could be fixed it would be no cost....if we needed a new windshield we'd have to pay $250. deductable.
Fellow just left and it was fixable so no cost to us. The chip was a small one with about an inch of a crack going out of it. Was surprised as how fast we got it fixed, just so happened when the insurance carrier called the glass guy happened to be in our town.
