Re: Extreme Cold Questions

Mike, How do you do the math for 2% alcohol? I have a 16 gal fresh water tank. Then, how much water do I need to drink to equal a shot of vodka? (pretend these are shot glasses)

Well, let's see.

16 gallons X 128 oz/gal = 2048 ounces in your tank

2048 X 2% (0.02) = 41 ounces of alcohol in full tank of water is 2% alcohol.

Since 80 proof is 40% alcohol, you need 100 ounces of 80 proof vodka, or nearly one gallon in a full tank for 2%.

That is why I only have one or two gallons in my tank to disinfect it. That way I only need 3-6 ounces of 80 proof vodka. One bottle will last many seasons.

Re: Extreme Cold Questions

Angel, here's my take on it...

1g = 128oz
16g = 2048oz
2% of 2048 = 41 oz (40.96 to be more exact) of vodka

1.5 oz of the mix (1 shot in the US) = 0.03 oz vodka
so about 50 oz of the mix gives 1.5 oz (1 shot) of pure vodka
That's about 1.5 quarts, a little weak for my taste. I stick to my 6% beer in 12oz 'shots'.

Interesting side note - In the US, 1 shot is 1.5 oz (a pony shot is 1oz) but overseas a shot is defined as anywhere from 20 ml (.67 oz) in Denmark & Germany up to 60ml (~2 oz) in Israel. This is per Wikipedia

Re: Extreme Cold Questions

Looks like I will stick with adding 8 cc's of bleach for my 16 gal fresh water. I have an inline water filter in the SMB that takes it back out. I will save the vodka to mix with better liquids than water.
