Hey CarringB, would you shed some light on particularly what older Ford scanner to look for? I wasn't aware of this. I don't want to hijack, hopefully this will help OP as well.

^Yup that's it. They make them even cheaper but not as nice. I had one which cost about $8 but it only had a single light and you had to count to blinks to form code digits (and repeat several times because I was paranoid I mis-counted). In fact, you can even use a paper clip to jumper two of the terminal, and it will flash the check engine light the same way, but I found that by the time I got the paper clip seated in both pins, and ran back to the driver's seat, it was already into it's blinks. The digital/numeric reader is the way to go for sure.
