Help!! Renting an SMB - East Coast US

This is my first time on the site.

I am posting from Brighton, England and am planning a trip for my boyfriend and I in oct 2009. We want to drive from Washington DC/NYC area to Miami.

In short I want to rent a Class B type camper van and have just seen SMB's for the first time today - they look awesome, especially the time and money that some people have put into their pride and joy.

How and where would I go about renting one for about 2 weeks.

Any help would be great

kat

Not saying there are not places to rent one from but I've never heard of any. A Sprinter might be another story but a four wheel drive SMB might be difficult to find for rent. Is a 4X4 what you want?

Re: Help!! Renting an SMB - East Coast US

Hey Dave,

Kat's boyfriend here - Llew

cheers for the quick reply. To be honest I would take anything I could get. We won't be needing a 4 x 4 so I wouldn't want to pay extra for something we didn't need... however I don't think i can be fussy. We're not planning on going crazy... mostly on the blacktop as its our first trip.

Are sprinters that much bigger than a SMB type? We use sprinters at my work as carriers for personnel and we have the long and short wheel base types.

Do most Sprinters conversion tend to be long or short? or a mix? And how will a SMB compare in size - that is, I've never seen them side by side but in my head I've got it that SMB's are slighty shorter?

So far I've found just the one company that does B-class RV's, that go one way down to Florida. They are a family business in NJ and I'm awaiting availability from them.... and that is it. There really doesn't seem to be much out there for me Looks like we're going to be camping at this rate! boooo!

Cheers
Llew (and kat)

I don't know of any company that rents SMBs. I do know of a company that rents GTRV's. GTRV's are, for lack of a better word, kind of like knock-offs of SMB's. They're built and sold in Canada BUT they are for rent through a company called Transatlantic RV that's based in Peekskill, NY (50 miles north of New York City, on the Metronorth commuter trainline out of Manhattan.) This company seems to cater specifically to renting or selling for buy back to Europeans. (Class B's and other vehicles) I do NOT know if they are reputable or not. I just ran into them at an RV show a couple years back and spoke to them since I live 10 minutes away from their dealership.

So, check out the link and make sure you think they feel legit/worthwhile.

http://www.transatlantic-rv.com

Good luck.

Re: Help!! Renting an SMB - East Coast US

A Sprinter will get better mileage than a van like most SMB are. But other companies make sprinter conversions like SMB does. If you're looking for a medium size RV and air conditioning is a must I would call around to who rent RV's and ask. I would think somebody in the US would rent them but I've never looked. Here are a couple sites:
http://www.adventuretouring.com/canada/ ... 19van.html
http://www.getrv.com/search.php
http://www.rvtraderonline.com/find/deal ... e/sprinter
http://www.motorhomeplace.com/rv-rental ... ternative/

An alternative also might be to rent a vehicle and a tent trailer...just a thought. BTW I no nothing about any of these rental agents so beware. Good luck.

Re: Help!! Renting an SMB - East Coast US

I'm sorry I don't know anything about where to rent Class B's, but I know they are available down here in FL, because I've seen them on the road with advertisements on the sides (I just cant remember the name of the company). A quick Google search for "Florida Class B RV rentals" should come up with a bunch of hits. I don't think anyone rents Sportsmobiles in particular, though.

On a more helpful note, try to get down to Miami after August since the bugs and heat are pretty bad right now and don't forget to stop (if you like beaches and the coast) at the North Carolina Outer Banks on the way down from the Northeast.
