Hoop steps repainting

Hey, all: My black hoop steps need refinishing after 15 years. Most of all they need repainting. What should I use on these? Thanks! - Rusty

Based on your username....I'd go with Rustoleum

Do you have an air sprayer?

If you have a means to spray you could consider a catalyzing 2 part automotive paint.

If not any rattlecan enamel is your only choice, although the best solution is likely having them stripped and powdercoated.

I agree with BW. Best/most expensive is powdercoat. Cheap and easy is a can of Rustoleum, which also allows for easy touch ups.

I had a flat black bumper on a Montero years ago. I just hit it with a rattle can once every year or tow, or whenever someone ran into the back of it.

IMHO cheap and easy touch up is undervalued.

But yes, for something you step on regularly I'd find a powder coater. FWIW, there are DIYs for powder coating that don't look too bad at this point. I've not tried any, YMMV.

I used Rust-oleum's Truck Bed Coating spray on mine and it's holding up very nicely. $7.50/can.

A rattle can is nice and would be my choice for this instance. Powder coating has pros and cons it works in low traffic areas and places that won't see abrasion. Once it's scratched mouisture makes its way in and it's downhill from there. With a rattle can you can touch it up every couple years and your out $5 and 15 minutes.

FWIW, I've "touched up" old powdercoating on a roll cage with black Rustoleum. Not a perfect match, but I wanted to protect the exposed areas.
