Re: Look what just drove up in my driveway, it's Rusty!

Got some great news on Rusty today. I pulled a rear hub cap and look what I found underneath!

A full floater!

Also, I've begun the cleanup process from the top down, literally. The roof had never been scrubbed, and really needs paint as a result, and the PH got a good scrub in and out. Warm soapy water did a heck of a job there, and Shout! worked great on the stains with no apparent ill effects. I pulled the small cabinet by the door and look how abused the carpet was (in 20 thousand miles). Unfreakenbelievable. Out it must come.

Any chance this van was partially under water at some point, given its Long Island provenance?

Re: Look what just drove up in my driveway, it's Rusty!

Well, it had a clean Carfax and all electronics seem to be fine. My theory is that the original owner just didn't care and left it parked at a beach house for years with the side pop-out windows open most of the time. Rusty snaps, screws etc near the windows seem to confirm this. As for water damage otherwise it seems impossible. Other parts of the van are so clean it looks as to have never been touched. It is a mystery but I have great plans for it. The carpet is the biggest mystery of all. There is no smell, no evidence of pets, no smoke stains, no mildew. Just wicked dirty carpet. I don't really dig carpet in vans, or campers for this reason.

Looks like Rusty found a good home.

You might want to check out that drum brake hardware buried under that rusty wheel! I'll bet there isn't much left of those return springs, and I'd be even more surprised if the adjuster still turns. You might just find yourself some extra braking power trapped within all that rust!
